Sandakan Yacht Club praised for success in organising regatta

SANDAKAN: Sabah Sports Council director Terrance Edward Pudin commended the success of the Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) in organising the just concluded regatta.

Terrance who met the participan­ts and officials at SYC on Sunday, thanked the organisers and hoped the Sandakan Yacht Club could continue to host the annual event.

Terrance conveyed the message to SYC rear commodore cum organising chairman James Leong during his visit to the venue.

Fifty-eight participan­ts from SYC, SAILA, Navy Yacht Club Kota Kinabalu, Kinabalu Yacht Club, Tawau Yacht Club and Royal Brunei Yacht Club took part in the regatta held in the waters off Sandakan Yacht Club from November 24 to 26.

Sabah Internatio­nal Dairies Sdn Bhd (SID) is the official sponsor of Sandakan Regatta Sabah Closed 2017 while Felcra Berhad and Alam Motivasi Sdn Bhd are the co-sponsors.

Sandakan Yacht Club honorary vice commodore James Pua is the sponsor of the Sandakan River Race.

Meanwhile, in his speech during the closing ceremony SYC commodore Paul Wong expressed appreciati­on to SID and all quarters who had supported and provided assistance that ensured the success of the regatta.

SYC had always been promoting the sport of sailing among its members and encouraged their children to take it up, Paul added.

“We hope to groom more young sailors through our training programmes to continue with the tradition,” he said.

Present at the event were Sandakan Municipal Council president Datuk James Wong, SID managing director Datuk Nasir Yeo, Karamuntin­g assemblyma­n Honorary Lt. Commander Datuk Charles O. Pang, SAILA president Christophe­r Chin, James Pua and James Leong.

Other guests included deputy OCPD Supt Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek, officer-in-charge of Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station Mohd Razali Ahmad, Lt Commander Hamidi Ahmad from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcemen­t Agency and ASP Mazre Che Mahmod from the Sandakan Marine Police.

For the Sabah Closed Challenge Trophy 2017 (Optimist), the winners of the Best Boy Senior Sailor of the Year (Christophe­r Chin Challenge Trophy) were Mohammad Shahieran Raiman (SAILA), Mohd Aiman Adam (SAILA) and Muhd Asmawi Iqbal (SAILA).

Best Girl Senior Sailor of the Year (Shoon Yun Chin Challenge Trophy): Nur Nuri Suharmin (SAILA), Nur Awatif Safri (SAILA) and Calister Teo Jing Yi (KYC).

Best Boy Novice Sailor of the Year 2017 (Pg Putra Pg Omar Challenge Trohpy): Sharul Yuzirafieq Razali (SAILA), Mohd Syahieradh­am Raiman (SAILA) and Chow Khai Yong (TYC)

Best Girl Novice Sailor of the Year 2017 (Pg Putra Pg Omar Challenge Trohpy): Hue Xin Yee (TYC), Nur Hafizahana­ni Zailan (SAILA) and Marcella Wilson (SAILA).
