Sabah Law Society to open new secretariat
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) will be officially opening the new secretariat at Suite No.6-611, 6th Floor, Menara MAA, Lorong Api-Api1, 88000, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah this Saturday.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Haji Aman has been invited to officiate at the event.
In conjunction with the official opening, members of the Sabah Law Society will be providing free legal advice to the public on any area of law including but not limited to criminal law, land law and syariah law.
“In addition, we will be providing free attestations of signatures by our members who are registered as Commissioners for Oaths,” said SLS president Brenndon Soh.
The Sabah Law Society was created following the amendments to the Advocates Ordinance of Sabah with compulsory membership for all lawyers.
The other amendments also include the creation of a Disciplinary Board with greater powers to strike off the roll, suspend or fine a lawyer; the establishment of a Compensation Fund for members of the public to claim relief for any loss or damage as a result of a dishonest lawyer; provisions to enable the Sabah Law Society to operate a deceased lawyer’s clients’ account; and to enable the Sabah Law Society to make rules concerning the professional indemnity insurance of all lawyers.
