-

KOTA KINABALU: A man, who was charged with threatening to hurt his wife, will stand trial at the Magistrate’s Court here on January 12 next year.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus put off the date for the case of Arun Kumar Govalan, 31, after the prosecution served documents which would be used in the trial, to Arun yesterday.

On October 4, Arun pleaded not guilty to the offence charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

The indictment provides for a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Arun was alleged to have committed criminal intimidation on Jishaleni A/P Segaran, 32, at a house at Taman BDC in Kolombong here between 10.05am to 10.30am on September 24.

He is currently released on RM3,500 bail with two local sureties pending disposal of the case.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Albert Basirin prosecuted while Arun was represented by counsel Luke Ressa Balang.

Meanwhile, three men and a woman were sentenced to four months’ jail by the Sessions Court yesterday for entering the State illegally.

Judge Azreena Aziz imposed the sentence on Benji Jain, Nazmir Abdul Amin, Ilham Nurdin and Suluriah Abdul Kasih, aged between 18 and 32, after they pleaded guilty to each of their charges under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The indictment carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 or a jail term of up to five years or both and also liable to whipping of not more than six strokes, upon conviction.

In pleading for a lenient sentence, the foreigners told the court that they had stayed in the state without valid travel documentation for between five and six months.

They also told the court that they had previously worked as technician, kitchen assistant, salon employee and sea products seller.

The court also ordered Nazmir to be whipped once while others were spared due to their age and gender.
