UMW Aerospace successfully manufactures maiden fan case for Rolls-Royce’s engine
SERENDAH: UMW Aerospace Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of UMW Holdings Bhd, yesterday successfully delivered its first fan case produced for Rolls-Royce’s Trent 1000 engine.
The fan case, produced for RollsRoyce’s Trent 1000 engine which powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, will be delivered to the Roll-Royce engine assembly and test facility at the Seletar Aerospace Park in Singapore.
Group chairman Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman said the inaugural delivery was a proud milestone in a remarkable journey that began on August 12, 2015 when UMW Aerospace signed a 25+5 year agreement with Rolls-Royce to manufacture and assemble fan cases for Rolls-Royce’s Trent 1000 and Trent 7000 engines.
“This makes UMW Aerospace the first Malaysian company to become a Tier 1 supplier to RollsRoyce.
“Today marks a significant milestone for the UMW Group as we have demonstrated our capabilities in high-value manufacturing. We have successfully delivered the first fan case to Rolls-Royce as scheduled under the long-term contract,” Hamad Kama Piah told reporters at the roll out ceremony for the maiden fan case yesterday.
The group, well-known in Malaysia for its automotive and equipment businesses, has now progressed into the aerospace components manufacturing industry and the achievement also coincided with UMW’s centenary celebrations this year, he said.
“This is the dawn of a new era for the UMW Group as we explore new opportunities in the high-value manufacturing sector. Our success will be the catalyst for the development of our industrial landbank in Serendah,” said Hamad Kama Piah.
UMW Group invested RM750 million to build the fan case manufacturing plant in Serendah which would be involved in the three core business of automotive, equipment manufacturing and engineering. — Bernama
