Father of five charged with abusing son

KUALA LUMPUR: A father of five was charged in the Sessions Court yesterday with abusing his son aged seven years and five months, leaving him without supervisio­n and failing to register his birth.

The man aged 32, who is unemployed, claimed trial.

On the first charge, he allegedly inflicted harm on his son, causing the boy to endure second degree burns at a house in Jalan Datuk Keramat here at 8 pm on Oct 1.

The charge under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or 20 years imprisonme­nt or both, on conviction.

On the second charge, the accused allegedly left the injured child without supervisio­n and care at the same place, at 11 am on Oct 8, under Section 33(1)(a) of the same Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or jail not exceeding two years on conviction.

The man is accused on the third charge of not registerin­g the birth of the boy between May and June 2009 at the same place, under Section 35 of the Births and Deaths Registrati­on Act 1957 (Act 299), which carries a maximum fine of RM250 on conviction.

Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah did not grant bail and set Jan 19 next year for remention.
