Maintain Feel-Safe Index at 88% – Kurup

-

PUTRAJAYA: The National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) must ensure the percentage of the sense of feeling safe among the community remains at 88 percent this year, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.

He said this was part of the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) set by the government for the department, besides increasing the percentage of the ‘Moments of Unity’ programme and the level of tolerance and acceptance of people of different religions in the country.

Kurup said there were currently 7,947 Rukun Tetangga (RT) Sector areas in the country, involving more than 160,000 residents.

He said although the JPNIN statistics for the Feel-Safe Index for communities in the RT areas last year was 92.21 percent, the situation could change depending on several factors such as satisfaction of the people with what had been achieved.

“We can target a higher index but for the moment, it is sufficient that the feel-safe percentage be retained and more importantly, it should not drop to below 88 percent,” he told a press conference after delivering his new year message, here, yesterday.

Kurup said the current programmes such as the Volunteer Patrol Scheme (SRS) in neighbourhoods and activities which promoted togetherness including gotong-royong and a love for the community must be continued and improved.

Earlier, Kurup witnessed the signing of the Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR) between JPNIN, represented by its directorgeneral, Datuk Baharin Idris and the MACC, by its deputy commissioner, Datuk Tan Kang Sai. - Bernama
