Filipino with samurai sword jailed 5 years

KOTA KINABALU: A Filipino was sentenced to five years’ imprisonme­nt by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for possessing a samurai sword.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus imposed the sentence on Abdul Raja Hasan, 43, after he pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 7 (1) (a) of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958.

The offence carries a jail term of up to 10 years, upon conviction.

The unrepresen­ted accused was arrested after the police found the weapon kept on his person at a squatters area at Taman Mahkota, Luyang on January 13.

The court also ordered the accused to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department after serving his jail term for further action.

In a separate case, Mohd Salleh Mohd Rauf, 29, claimed trial in the same court here to assisting in disposing stolen instant drinks belonging to two men.

The accused had allegedly committed the offence at a house at Taman Cenderamat­a 2 in Likas at 7am on January 8.

He was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which is punishable by a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The magistrate set February 19 to re-mention the case and released the accused on a bail of RM5,000 with two local sureties.
