Shirley Poh, Ian Quek are Labuan Senior Amateur Golf Open champions

LABUAN: Shirley Poh @ Lee Suk Len clinched the Ladies title at the 6th Labuan Senior Amateur Open Golf Championsh­ip to complete her hat-trick of titles in the tournament which ended at the the Labuan Golf Club (LGC) here on Sunday.

Ian Quek also emerged as the Men’s champion but the day surely belongsto Poh for her memorable victory.

Poh did not have it easy in the battle for the title with veteran Rokia Daud proving a match for her.

In fact both golfers carded identical Gross score of 185, each playing 95 and 90 over two days of competitio­n respective­ly, to force the play-off.

However, Rokia was not around when the play-off was to be played thus the tournament referee decided to award the champion’s title to Poh who was in the club house waiting for the deciding hole.

In the Men’s Gross category, Quek carded a three-over 75 on the closing day to deny overnight leader Peter Tan the title.

Quek who started off with 82 on Saturday totalled 157 to edge Tan by two strokes with the latter playing 80 and 79.

Third place went to Osman Jalil (82, 79 - 161 OCB) followed by Kunjin Sandhu (81, 80 - 161) and Adnan Jaud (83, 81 - 164).

The other categories were for the Nett Event for Men where Category A (55-60 years old) went toHj Ishmamudin Mansor (141); Category B (61-65 years old) winner Jusmin Kegis (146); Category C (above 65 years old) winner Wong Sing Ngiong (151); Ladies Nett Category A (45-60 years old) winner Alice Wong (152): and Category B (above 61 years old) winner Balwinder Kaur (173).

The championsh­ip saw 112 players competing with 100 in the men’s competitio­n and the rest in the ladies event.

Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Datuk Isli, who is also the chairman of Perbadanan Labuan, presented the trophies and prizes to the Men’s and Ladies Gross winners.

Sabah Golf Associatio­n (SGA) president Datuk George Bandusena, the director of Operations, Labuan Internatio­nal Shipcare (LIS) Pravin Raina, LGC presidentc­um-organising chairman Arthur Kong, SGA vice president-cum-Kudat Golf Club president Mohammad Kulat, Tournament chairman-cumLGC captain Joak Jolonius and LGC ex-captain Ranjit Singh were among those present.
