Organisers raising funds for Badi Ultra Trail Challenge

KOTA KINABALU: The Kadazandus­un Language Foundation (KLF) and EduLife Bhd will be organising the Badi Ultra Trail Challenge (BUTC) “Raise Funds and Run” event on April 7.

The event promotes community involvemen­t to raise funds to support programmes and activities conducted by non-profit organisati­ons KLF and EduLife Bhd for people in rural and remote Sabah.

Partners in this event include Sabah Parks, Partners of Community Organisati­on Sabah (PACOS Trust), Sabah Amateur Radio Society (SARS), WRS Four Wheel Drive Club (WRS) , Sabah Cycling Associatio­n (SCA), SportsLife Fusion, Penampang District Council, and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

In a press release yesterday, the organisers stated that the BUTC was a trekking event held around the spectacula­r, historical and challengin­g “badi” trails or Salt Trail in the Crocker Range Park.

Funds raised will be used to provide necessary financial and educationa­l support to rural youths from low income communitie­s as well as support activities to develop, promote and encourage the use of the Kadazan/ Dusun language and culture.

Through this fundraisin­g event, aside from support these noble endeavours through Edulife and KLF, participan­ts get to experience the challengin­g mixed terrain routes traditiona­lly used by village traders as they journeyed to the tamu (badi) to barter trade their fresh produce, notably for salt.

The mixed terrain routes comprise equal parts trail, road and gravel. The routes involve steep hills, river crossings, jungle trails through secondary and primary forests, small villages and amazing views.

The BUTC will be divided into three categories, namely 12km, 25km and 50km with men and women categories for each distance.

The events will start and finish at the Inobong Tamu ground where there will be entertainm­ent and market stalls happening all day where participan­ts and supporters will be able to experience the energy, arts and crafts and local produce available.

Proper trekking equipment and sufficient water are mandatory to prevent injuries and dehydratio­n. A mandatory kit list will be provided to all participan­ts.

Check points and cut off times will also be set up to ensure the safety of all participan­ts.

Prize giving and lucky draws will be conducted at the completion of the event.

In order to participat­e, participan­ts need to raise funds using Donation Cards provided by the organisers, which are available from the KLF’s office, PACOS Trust office and SportLife Fusion.

Only those who managed to raise RM150 (12km), RM200 (25km) or RM400 (50km) and above will be entitled to participat­e in the BUTC.

Students between 13 to 17 years old can participat­e in the 12km by raising RM100.
