Christina Ideris helps UMS achieve medal target

KOTA KINABALU: Christina Ideris redeemed her failure to defend her gold medal in silat when she won the women’s kumite 68kg in karate at the Higher Learning Institutio­ns Sports Carnival (SUKIPT), yesterday.

The victory also helped Universiti Malaysia Sabah to achieve their target of two gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes at the SUKIPT venue in UKM, Bangi, Selangor.

Christina, who is dubbed the ‘iron lady’ of UMS beat Siti Hajar Mohd Azhar from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), 4-1 in the final. The bronze medals went to exponents from Politeknik Malaysia and UNISZA.

Christina is known as the UMS iron lady for showing prowess in various sports which also include rugby and netball.

“Congratula­tions to Christina for helping to achieve the two gold medals target, which is a fine finish for UMS.

“Congratula­tions also to the other athletes who contribute­d medals,” said UMS Sports Centre director Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah when contacted.

UMS concluded their challenge at the games with two gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

The taekwondo squad contribute­d one gold, three silvers and a bronze, while another silver medal came from athletics (women’s long jump) courtesy of JI Fedalliah Claritta Jaimin.

A total of 18 athletes and seven officials represente­d the UMS contingent. They were one of the smallest out of more than 100 participat­ing contingent­s from all over the country.

UMS athletes took part in only six out of the 27 sport events, namely taekwondo, karate, athletics, tenpin bowling and petanque.

Other sports in the games were rugby, football, lawn bowls, cricket, hockey, badminton, table tennis, chess, volleyball, fencing, sepak takraw, squash, netball, golf, tennis, beach volleyball, cycling, shooting, archery and swimming.

The games concluded officially today.
