First phase of Labuan Motorsports Circuit project launched

LABUAN: The long-awaited Labuan Motorsport Circuit project has finally taken off, with the launch of its first phase yesterday.

The RM7 million project mooted by the Labuan Umno Youth five years ago will be built on a 12-acre site in Kiansam in two phases and scheduled for completion next year.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Phase 1 involved a RM3 million allocation via the Implementation Coordination Unit (under the Prime Minister’s Department) while the remaining RM4 million would be disbursed next year.

“The project was promised by the government in 2013, and we fulfilled it today. The delay was due to a number of issues to be sorted out like land acquisition, layout design and federal government funding,” he said.

He was speaking at the handing-over of the RM3 million allocation for the motorsport circuit to the Labuan Corporation, and the launch of the motorsport circuit in Kiansam yesterday.

Tengku Adnan said the project was part of the development projects listed in the recentlylaunched Labuan Development Blueprint 2030 to take Labuan to greater heights in the sports development.

He said the project which involved a 1km circuit would feature ‘my laps tracking timing system’, tracks for race pit, gocart, drift, mini GP, drag strip, pocket bike, supermoto and superbike.

Other facilities include a grandstand with hill stand seating, podium paddock, administrative building and retail premises.

“The circuit is strategically located and close to the Labuan halal hub. Future 4X4 projects and motocross extreme games on a 20-acre site adjacent to the circuit are also in the pipeline,” he said.

He said the project would provide a brighter future for youth via a safer racing environment, thus adding motorcycling sports as another tourism product in Borneo, particularly Labuan. - Bernama
