Enriching guidance at Nilai University

-

IT is never an easy road to the top and Soo Lih Pinmay just be the person to vouch for this.

Stress, conflict and confusion were just some of the mixed emotions she went through when she was studying for her degree in Nilai University. Soo, who recently graduated from her B.Sc. (Hons) in Nursing programme from Nilai U aced the Best Student Award 2017.

“I owe my success to my family, friends, lecturers and the university’s personal counsellor, Nicole Ng who was my personal counselor at Nilai U,” she said.

Most important was the precious ‘gift’ she received at the end of the tough journey.

“At the end of the day, what I learned was resilience,” she said, a topic covered in a course on mental health at the university.

Needless to say, Soo found the topic extremely useful in helping her get through the ups and downs of study life.

“The Nursing programme runs on a very rigorous schedule. We had our academic studies and we were placed at various hospitals for our practicals,” said Soo.

“Nursing students are also required to meet the standards set by the Malaysian Nursing Board before we can practice as a registered nurse (RN),” added Soo. As such, Soo shared that it was easy to get overwhelmed by the continuous exams, assessments and practicals.

“I am grateful for our lecturers who guided us through the programme. They were always there to offer us academic and personal support, especially when we underwent our training at the hospitals. I am especially grateful to Miss Ng and would like to say a very special thank youfor patiently counselling me through my difficulties,” added Soo.

Soo said that the companionship and guidance she received from the counsellor helped her build her resilience and gave her an insight on how she could approach her challenges in a positive manner.

Soo who hails from Kuala Lumpur chose to do her Nursing Degree at Nilai U because she was wowed by the green and tranquil campus surrounding.

“The peaceful surroundings gave my friends and I a welcome reprieve from the stresses of a hectic day,” said Soo.

“When we felt we needed a break, we would just step out and enjoy the bountiful greenery. There were some nights that we spent hours chatting and staring at the stars,” added Soo.

However, if there was one thing Soo regrets, it was that she did not spend enough time on her extra-curricular activities.

“Our hectic schedules left us with very little time for extracurricular activities but I am extremely proud of being part of the Ribbon Week,” she said.

Soo explained that the Ribbon Week is an annual universitywide event spearheaded by the Nursing Department and it focuses on creating awareness on cancer, AIDs, Safe Motherhood and organ donation.

Soo also emphasised that Nilai U’s nursing students were often mentioned in a positive light by the staff and management of the hospitals where they did their practicals.

“It became even more important for each new batch to preserve this good impression and we worked hard to do so,” said Soo.

When asked what her future plans are, Soo said that she plans to move to Singapore to pursue her nursing career where she hopes to gain clinical experience. More importantly, she wants to contribute to the community in whatever way she can.

Nilai U’s B.Sc. (Hons) in Nursing is approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian Nursing Board (under the Ministry of Health).

The programme equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the areas of health, behavioural and nursing sciences as well as focuses on management and leadership skills.
