Tremors felt in various parts of state capital
KOTA KINABALU: The 5.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Ranau at 9.06pm last night was felt in Kota Belud, Menggatal, Inanam, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Putatan and Papar as well.
Mary Siah, who was alone working at Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) office at Taman Antarabangsa in Likas, said she had actually felt tremors twice in the evening yesterday before the one at 9.06pm.
“Some of my stationery fell to the floor.
“But I wasn’t afraid as I was not in a high rise building. The whole neighbourhood was also pretty quiet after the tremors
“The most important thing is that all Sabahans are safe,” she stressed.
A reporter who was covering Women’s Day celebration organized by The United Sabah Chinese Communities Association of Kota Kinabalu (USCCAKK) at Hakka Hall reported feeling the tremor lasting three to five seconds but luckily no one panicked.
He said the chandeliers at the banquet shook during the earthquake, but the incident had not disrupted the dinner.
He said some dinner guests had not even felt the tremor at all.
Meanwhile, Mdm Chai, 58, said she was at home near Lido when she felt the tremor.
“My glass doors started vibrating and I heard someone at my taman shouting earthquake.
“It only lasted a few seconds though.
“No one panicked as the tremor was over before anyone could react.”
Soon after, she said news of the earthquake began to spread through social media like WhatsApp where friends and families checked on each other.
Meanwhile, Jordon Chok, 46, who lives in Kepayan, said he was playing with his phone upstairs at home when his windows and door shook.
“It was not as strong as the first earthquake but I felt the tremor.
“I ran downstairs. My wife told me she had not felt anything but my daughter definitely felt the tremor.”
He said the tremor only lasted about three to four seconds.
“I was nauseous the first time I experienced earthquake. But after the experience, I was not as afraid.”
An aftershock of 2.8 magnitude was later reported at Ranau at 9.27pm.
