LABUAN: Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) is a government-owned company appointed by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) as one of the sewerage development certifying agencies that provide technical feedback, carry out site visits and approve sewearge development plans for new projects.

As a certifying agency on behalf of SPAN, IWK has a duty to ensure all certifying works adhere to the Water Services Industry Act 2006 (WSIA) and other related sewerage industry regulations.

“The same regulations apply to all states in order to ensure all practices are uniform and fulfill the standards set by industry regulators,” IWK stated in a statement issued here yesterday when commenting on an article entitled “Chamber: IWK scaring away Labuan investors” in a local daily on March 4.

“For the past seven years, IWK has processed 961 sewerage development plans in Labuan. This is a testament to IWK’s commitment to plan and manage an efficient sewerage system that not only supports growth and development but also contributes to environmental sustainability.

“Under WSIA, any premises located within a distance of 30 meters to the nearest sewerage pipes must be connected to the public sewerage systems.

“As for the case of the 19 units of light warehouses built in RanchaRancha, they are well within the stipulated distance, thus the developers were advised by IWK to connect to the Labuan Regional Sewerage Treatment Plant (RSTP) in Rancha-Rancha to ensure safe and controlled effluent discharge to the environment and protect the critical flora and fauna around the island.

“With a design PE of 27,000, the Labuan RSTP is currently in good operating condition and has continually met all the regulations and standards set by the Department of Environment (DOE).

“All users who are connected to the public sewer lines are in fact helping to preserve the environment. Currently, IWK serves approximately 6,000 accounts in Labuan, equivalent to 29,000 population equivalent.”
