Tshung Tsin, St James overall athletics champs

KOTA KINABALU: SM Tshung Tsin and SRJK St James emerged as overall winners at the final day of the Kota Kinabalu District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Track and Field Meet, yesterday.

SM Tshung Tsin won the Secondary Schools competitio­n, while SRJK St James were overall champions of the Primary Schools category.

SM Tshung Tsin bagged 21 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze medals to finish in a league of their own, while SM All Saints were second with 10 golds, 10 silvers and six bronzes and SM Lok Yuk third with six golds, seven silvers and seven bronzes.

SM Tshung Tsin also won both the boys and girls overall for the under-18 category, while SMK Agama Tun Ahmadshah won the boys’ under-15 and SM All Saints won the girls’ category for the same age group.

A total of 26 secondary schools competed in the annual event including private institutio­ns. A total of 18 schools managed to win at least one gold medal, while only two schools concluded with no medal at all.

SM Tshung Tsin’s Desmond Wong Tzyy Luen was named Best Sportsman (u-18) with gold medal achievemen­ts in the 100m and 200m, while Britanny Isabelle Boilis from SM All Saints won the Best Sportswoma­n with her gold medals and new records in the 800m and 1,500m.

Mohd Dzulfikri Matin won the Best Sportsman in the U-15 category. The SMK Agama Tun Ahmadshah student set a new record in the 2,000m steeple chase and won the 1,500m, while Zovi Tie Yu Pei from SM All Saints won the Best Sportswoma­n u-15.

Meanwhile, SRJK St James were the overall winners of the primary schools category after they won six gold medals, four silvers and three bronzes.

SJK Yik Nam were second on four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze followed by SK Malawa with one gold and two silvers.

The other two schools that competed in the primary category were SK Tanjung Aru 1 and Sk Kolombong.

Joe Vee Deny from SK Tanjung Aru was named Best Sportsman with his gold medal in the 100m, while Nathania Wong Tze Xing from SJK St James won the Best Sportswoma­n when she won the 100m and 200m.

Nathania also set new records in both events.

Present to officiate at the prize presentati­on and closing ceremony was Dr Kibin Samad, political secretary to Minister in the Prime Minister’s department Datuk Seri Rahman Dahlan.
