KOTA KINABALU: SMK Tebobon has been allocated RM500,000 to improve its open hall.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman in announcing the allocation, however, stressed that he wants to see the hall put to full use by the students.

“I want to see them use the hall for activities like performing arts, poetry recitals and cultural performances. Don’t just use the hall for meetings,” he said when officiating SMK Tebobon’s ParentTeacher Association’s annual general meeting here in Tebobon, Manggatal here on Saturday.

Abdul Rahman said he would meet with the Education Minister and inform the latter that the Economic Planning Unit (EPD) will provide the funds for the hall’s improvement.

He also asked for a commitment from the school to produce more engineers, architects and professionals.

“But remember to encourage the students to pursue arts,” he said and reminded parents to take an interest in their children’s education.

“We cannot just allow the teachers to be responsible for educating our children, we must play our part too,” he stressed.

Abdul Rahman also said that the federal government is committed to developing education in the state and that is a fact that cannot be denied. “I spoke to the Prime Minister once and asked for allocation to repair the schools in Sabah that are in disrepair as the students there also have a right to a comfortable and conducive learning environment,” he said.

The Prime Minister, he said, announced a RM1 billion allocation each for Sabah and Sarawak for repairing these schools.

Abdul Rahman said the state and federal governments were working towards ensuring ‘zero’ schools in disrepair in the state.

During the event, the Kota Belud member of parliament also donated 360 units of scientific calculators to the school.
