KOTA KINABALU: The PENTOWA-KBS team achieved their target of becoming champions at the Quadrangular Indoor Borneo Inter Club tournament that was held in Brunei on Friday.
Bigger triumphs could also be on the horizon as the team looks forward to welcoming sponsors for more competitive outings this year.
In the final they upset the host team (Brunei national squad) 2-0 to proudly clinch the champion's title.
The team was the only entry outside of Brunei and it represented the Penampang Tugof-War Association (PENTOWA) and Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS).
The first round of matches at the Brunei Open Stadium saw PENTOWA-KBS beat two teams, EWC A and EWC B, also by 2-0.
“We are very happy because we achieved our target in bringing home the title and we also did it in style as we remained unbeaten throughout the competition (single-round league format).
“I think this team is on track to face other major competitions,” said team manager Rainold Mokujin when contacted, yesterday.
The team is now eyeing several more upcoming competitions.
Comprising pullers from Penampang, Tambunan, Kota Marudu and Kudat under the guidance of Asmawi Majingkin Abdullah and led by Anderson Martin, the team hopes to shine on the big stage.
They are targeting entry in an international competition in Kedah this July, the World Outdoor Championships in Johannesburg (South Africa) and the Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in November.
“We hope to get sponsors to join the big tournaments. We have a team with big potential but financial burdens are among the causes why we (Sabah) failed to participate in major competitions overseas,” Rainold said.
He is grateful to all sponsors and the Brunei Tug-of-War Association for assisting and supporting the team's participation in Brunei.
Members of the PENTOWAKBS team are Rainol J Mokujin (manager), John Gilbert Johnny (director), Mohd Asmawi Majingkin Abdullah (coach and puller), Anderson Martin, Alford Tokuyuk, Daud Ansaning, Norbert Rianius, Marvin Oscar Domingo, Maron Majimal, Geinod Lozitin, Jesper Jiwil, Jefery Rahman and Rayner Rensin.
