Time to promote earthquake awareness – Rahman

SEPANGGAR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan says it is time the government promote earthquake awareness through education.

He said earthquake awareness should begin at school level by creating a module to bring awareness to students.

“As we know, a module on fire has been created in schools, and now it’s time for a module on earthquake awareness because the disaster is no longer uncommon in our country, especially in Sabah.

“The government must see the need for earthquake awareness and the initiative to create the module so that we know how and what to do should an earthquake occur,” he said after officiating a parent-teacher association (PTA) meeting for Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tobobon here yesterday.

Abdul Rahman, who is also Kota Belud MP, said awareness of the disaster was important, especially to reduce public panic and provide knowledge on measures to be taken in the event of an earthquake.

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Ranau and tremors were felt in some areas on the west coast of Sabah at 9.06pm on Thursday.

Earlier in his speech at the event, Abdul Rahman announced an allocation of RM500,000 to upgrade the school’s hall.
