Climber recounts Ranau quake during Mt Kinabalu expedition

-

MIRI: A local mountain climber yesterday related her experience during the 5.2-magnitude earthquake in Sabah last Thursday.

Chu Chee Ning, who completed her climb up Mount Kinabalu a day before the quake, told The Borneo Post that although the earthquake struck after her group had descended the mountain, they were worried for the safety of the other climbers still up there at the time.

“I, a friend and my niece had already come down from the mountain after conquering the summit on Wednesday morning. We stayed a bit longer in Kota Kinabalu to enjoy the view before my flight on Thursday afternoon.

“When the earthquake struck Ranau, I could feel the ground moving under my feet. I was told all the climbers were brought to a safe place thanks to the efforts of the mountain guides,” said the 55-year-old, adding the tremors started at 9.06pm.

Chu pointed out that the safety of the trail at Mt Kinabalu has been enhanced following the 2015 earthquake, and that Sabah Parks and the state government deserve to be praised.
