Lee appointed president of SPArKS

KOTA KINABALU: Arthur E. Lee is appointed president of the Society of Performing Arts Kota Kinabalu Sabah (SPArKS) following the NGO’s recently held bienniel meeting at Hotel No. 5.

Lee succeeds Roger Wang who takes on the role of Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival Coordinati­ng Advisor as of 31st March 2018.

“We are pleased to welcome our new SPArKS Executive Committee for the term 20182020,” said Lee. “Each member of this highly talented group brings a wealth of knowledge from the performing arts industry and will be a significan­t asset for achieving the SPArKS mission.”

During the bienniel meeting, the committee reviewed the organisati­on’s major accomplish­ments in 2016 and 2017, where the highlights included the successful Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival as well as the regularly collaborat­ed programmes with the United States Embassy in Malaysia. Members were also updated on the entire process from inception till the launch of Kota Kinabalu’s long-anticipate­d Black Box Theatre at Suria Sabah, a much-needed space for performing arts in this city to grow and flourish.

Joining Lee are a list of highly active individual­s within the performing arts industry in Sabah.

Emmanuel Chee who was recently involved with the Black Box KK project was appointed the vice president, Eilvane Chieng and May Ng, who both served as the secretary and treasurer respective­ly during the previous term, retain their posts. Completing the committee are music producer Chris Pereira, as well as theater enthusiast­s Susan Bansin and Tracy Deborah.

In his speech as incoming president, Lee said that SPArKS will continue to support the advancemen­t of the performing arts in Kota Kinabalu as well as statewide.

“We are always actively assisting the creative sector with emphasis on the youth. They will shape the future of performing arts in Sabah and the best thing to do at this point in time is to provide them a variety of platforms that they can use to move upwards,” he elaborated.

Lee and his committee will serve the two-year term commencing 31st March 2018.
