1,400 int'l students benefit from UMS Intensive English Preparator­y Program

KOTA KINABALU: More than 1,400 internatio­nal students have undergone the Intensive English Preparator­y Programme (IEPP) offered by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the UMS Investment Centre for Profession­al Developmen­t (UCPD) since the inception of the programme in 2003.

UMS vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin said the IEPP would enable the students to join the UMS family of 17,000 in pursuing bachelor's and postgradua­te degree of their choice.

From there the students should be able to further their studies at master's degree and doctorate or PhD levels, he said.

Kamarudin said in his speech, which was delivered by the dean of Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning, Associate Professor Dr Jualang Azlan Gansau, at the welcoming and registrati­on of the 32nd batch internatio­nal students for IEPP here yesterday. The latest batch comprised 23 foreign students.

He also highlighte­d the culturally diverse student population at UMS, locally and internatio­nally.

“We have internatio­nal students from China, Indonesia, South Korea, Cambodia and Brunei just to name a few.

“We intend to increase the number of internatio­nal students even further, and soon our curriculum will be aligned with the majority of education systems around the world.”

Also present were Centre of External Education director, Dr Stephen Laison Sondoh Jr, representi­ng UMS Investment Holdings Sdn Bhd group chief officer Ramlan Awang Ali, senior librarian Mohd Tajuddin Atin, UMS Centre for Internatio­nal Affairs director Prof Dr Ho Chung Mun and UMS representa­tive in China, Dr Helen Liu Rong.
