183 women have been charged with corruption – MACC

-

TAWAU: Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) has urged women to play a crucial role in curbing corruption, crimes and misuse of power.

MACC State Director Datuk Sazali bin Salbi, said, generally the number of corruption cases involving women was much lower compared to men.

However, he said it was still worrying when viewed in terms of the increasing number.

According to the MACC statistics between 2012 and January 2018, about 700 investigation files on corruption and misuse of power involving women in the country had been opened.

A total of 453 women had been detained for investigation and 183 of them had been charged in court, he added.

“The role of women in providing advice, education and guidance can create a wave of awareness in abuse of power and corruption in the community,” Sazali said.

“Therefore, I strongly urge all women to be more alert and sensitive to any crimes involving and misuse of power in their surroundings.

“Please do not think of yourself as a weak group but on the other hand, you have the strength in making changes to your family and country.

“Each woman should have positive thinking and assisting the men as well as other individuals in keeping away from corruption and misuse of power,” Sazali pointed out in his speech when officiating at the first Anticorruption Woman Movement (G-War) at district level at Puspanita Tawau in front of Tawau Municipal Council (TMC) building here yesterday.

Also present was the chairperson of Puspanita Tawau, Puan Normah Norazwaniee Aziz.

G-War is an idea to motivate and lead the women working together with MACC in curbing corruption, crimes and misuse of power in a line with the MACC Strategic Plan (2017-2020).

The third core strategic in the respective plan has indicated that it is a culture of hated corruption and the strengthening of public support with the people-friendly approach.

G-War is the first program to be held for the woman group in order to generate a culture of hating corruption and pushing away the corruption culture.

It was also to enhance women in five cluster terms as: (a) Woman and Health; (b) Woman and Safety; (c) Woman and Economic; (d) Woman and Education; (e) Woman and Culture.
