MMMC is proud of its antecedents

-

MELAKA-Manipal Medical College (MMMC) is proud of its origins with the iconic education and healthcare giant, Manipal of India.

Manipal established its first institution, Kasturba Medical College, in 1953, and in the 1960s and ‘70s droves of Malaysians who wished to pursue medical education, but could not do so in Malaysia due to the dearth of medical schools in then, made a beeline to Manipal.

So much that it is reckoned that one in every five medical doctor in our country is a Manipal alumni. Such has been its solid progress in education in its 65 years since its founding that Manipal boasts of 21 Institutions with 407 courses serving over 33,000 students from 67 countries.

Little wonder that MMMC is extremely proud of its Manipal antecedents.

MMMC itself was established in 1997 and since its first batch 21 years ago, over 3900 highly proficient medical and dental professionals have graduated. These doctors and dentists are now practicing not just in Malaysia, but all over the world stretching from the USA to Australia.

The much sought for MMMC’s degrees in medicine and dental surgery are spread over its twin campuses in India and Malaysia.

Pre-clinical study is completed in Manipal, India and then return to Malaysia for the clinical training in Malaysian general hospitals. Manipal is considered one of the largest Anatomy and Pathology museums in Asia with over 1000 dissected specimens. MMMC students count themselves among the lucky ones have access to many such excellent resources in a University environment.

Unlike many medical schools in Malaysia which make do with mannequins and plastic models, MMMC students have hands-on anatomy practical with actual cadavers. Resources are not limited to academia only, sports and social facilities are second to none.

MMMC started off with its much vaunted MBBS in 1997 and then followed up with the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 2009. Leveraging on the Manipal’s reputation in India as the top dental school, MMMC’s BDS programme has rightly earned its accolades.

MMMC also has a Foundation in Science (FIS), a 1-year pre-University course completed entirely in Melaka. A unique programme, the FIS is purpose built to prepare students for the MBBS and BDS undergraduate degrees.

Included are subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Oral Biology, and it has been noted that such a curriculum provides for a faster easing into the degree programmes.

It is promising to note that the FIS has a remarkable success rate of 95 per cent and above. Students in the MBBS and BDS who have been through it have given positive feedback about the good foundation obtained at the FIS level.

Incidentally, MMMC’s FIS students are given priority to its MBBS and BDS programmes.

As part of its 2 decade stay in Malaysia, MMMC is now offering scholarships for the FIS programme. 100 per cent scholarships await those ‘Straight As’ but even those with 5As will not be left out.

Those with a passion for medicine and dentistry, but are often deterred by financial concerns now have an opportunity to pursue their dreams of the noble vocation of healing.

PTPTN now offers loans of RM150, 000 for all applicants of the MBBS programme.

MMMC’s campuses in Melaka, Muar and Manipal, India provide the impeccable settings for study and play, providing excellent accommodation in all its campuses. It would be remiss of me if I do not recommend a visit to Melaka and be convinced by seeing for it yourself.
