Man fined RM6,000 for careless driving, causing injuries

TAWAU: A 27-year-old man was fined RM6,000 in default five months’ jail by a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for driving carelessly without paying attention and causing injuries to a van driver.

Magistrate Ferhanshah Farene imposed the sentence on Doddy Peter Chong, 27, for a charge under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a fine of not less than RM4,000 and not more than RM10,000 or imprisonme­nt of not more than 12 months upon conviction.

The magistrate also ordered the offence to be endorsed in the accused’s driving license.

Doddy was driving his jeep from Bandar Sri Indah to Taman Kuhara when he lost control and entered into the opposite lane and collided with a van driven by Menteng bin Sulaiman, 69, about 4.35am on March 26, 2017 at Km 7 Apas Road.

The victim suffered a broken left leg and was wounded on the left eyebrow and feet.

Another Magistrate’s Court fined a 22-year-old man RM5,000 in default three months in jail for overtaking dangerousl­y and causing injuries to a motorcycli­st.

Magistrate Herlina Muse imposed the sentence on Mohd Fitri Azizat bin Mingoh who was charged under Section 43(1)(A) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a fine of not less than RM4000 and not more than RM10,000 or imprisonme­nt of not more than 12 months upon conviction.

The accused was driving a car from town to Jambatan Putih and overtook a car that caused him to collide with a motorcycle about 12.35am on June 29, 2017 in front of a Petron petrol station at North Road.

The impact of the accident caused the motorcycli­st to suffer a broken thigh, broken right rib and injuries to his liver and kidney.
