Jobless man jailed for cheating over IC

KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed man was jailed for 12 months and fined RM5,000, in default, six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for cheating a man over an issuance of a so-called identity card from the National Registrati­on Department.

Suharno Trio @ Tario, 55, pleaded guilty before magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, to a charge under Section 420 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a jail term of up to 10 years and whipping or with a fine, upon conviction.

The accused admitted to deceiving the victim, aged 43, by making the victim believed that the accused was an Immigratio­n officer who could help in managing the issuance process of the said identity card of one Ivy Ng and induced the victim to hand over RM4,500 to the accused in Tanjung Aru on August 8, 2017.

Meanwhile, the same court had rejected the accused’s guilty plea for another cheating charge.

The court set May 21 for case management after the accused disputed the facts of the case read to him by the court interprete­r.

The charge stated that the accused had allegedly cheated another man, 39, by saying that the accused is an Immigratio­n officer which could help the victim in the processing the release of a detainee known as Yusri Rahim from the prison.

For that, the accused had allegedly induced the victim to give the accused RM1,200 at a restaurant here between March 15 at 8pm and March 17 at 7.30pm.

Prosecutin­g officer Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit appeared for the prosecutio­n.
