Unemployed man jailed, caned for armed robbery
PETALING JAYA: An unemployed man was sentenced to 10 years' jail and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here yesterday for armed gang robbery on an elderly woman four years ago.
Judge Hilmiah Yusof handed down the punishment on T. T. Annadurai, 38, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case.
The court ordered Annadurai to serve the sentence from today after rejecting the stay application from his counsel Yusri Yusof pending appeal.
Annadurai along with A. Ganesan, 35, who had been sentenced earlier and another person still at large were charged with gang robbery while armed with a machete on Cheong Yew Neo, 74.
They robbed the victim of her gold necklace, silver pendant, a credit card, two debit cards, pension card, driving licence and coins.
They committed the offence at a house in Jalan SS1/15 Kampung Tunku, Sg Way here at about 2 pm on July 24, 2014 under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the same Code which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Five prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses testified during the trial.
