Repsol, DoE host Earth Day camp for schoolchildren
TAMBUNAN: Repsol Oil & Gas Malaysia Limited and the Department of Environment (DoE) Sabah recently hosted some 60 primary schoolchildren from six schools in Tambunan District to an overnight environmental awareness camp in conjunction with Earth Day 2018 with the theme, “End Plastic Pollution”.
This recent camp, held at Mahua Waterfall Homestay Tambunan, marked the fifth year of collaboration between Repsol and DoE in a continued effort to promote and create environmental awareness “ambassadors” among our youths on the need to conserve and preserve planet Earth for the future generation.
Director of DoE Sabah, Tunku Khalkausar Tunku Fathahi who officiated at the camp’s closing ceremony, highlighted that environmental conservation required the concerted cooperation from all levels of society for it to be successful.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 each year to remind communities globally on the importance of caring, preserving and conserving our most valuable treasure, Mother Earth.
She shared with participants the multi-faceted strategies towards controlling and educating the society in rejecting, reducing and recycling the usage of plastics.
In view of the continuous threat of pollution, she urged that more activities relating to environmental conservation awareness to be conducted at the school and tertiary levels as well as the general public.
Tunku Khalkausar congratulated Repsol for the monetary contribution and its personnel for the ideas and time in making a success of this year’s programme which was held at Mahua Waterfall Homestay in Tambunan.
“An environmental awareness camp such as this one represented a proactive effort and an effective activity in the overall drive towards an impactful movement in the conservation of our environment,” she reiterated.
Repsol Malaysia’s Legal Manager, Dayangku Marianah Pengiran Mahmuddin, disclosed that environmental education such as this recent environmental awareness camp for schoolchildren represented a part of Repsol’s commitment to communities around which they operate.
She said that this year’s theme, “End Plastic Pollution”, reminded us all on the need to reduce the usage of plastic materials as these are non-biodegradable and not sustainable.
Dayangku Marianah hoped that this camp had opened up the minds of the young participants to stand up and protect the environment to ensure the sustainability of our only heritage, planet Earth.
“Hence, it is also hoped that the camp will spur on their spirits to take proactive steps towards the preservation of the environment either through personal initiatives or in group activities at nature clubs in their respective schools,” she added.
The participating schools were SK Tiong Widu, SRK St David Toboh, SK Kinaluan, SK Patau, SK Pegalan Kusob and SK Kipaku.
