LABUAN: The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Labuan parliamentary seat, Datuk Rozman Isli continued his second day of campaigning today, as he met fishmongers and hawkers at the Pasar Sentral in the UTC building.

Accompanied by the BN election machinery comprising the MCA, MIC and Umno, he handed over the Labuan BN manifesto and listened to the traders' grievances while explaining the BN government's development plans for Labuan.

“It is a smooth election campaign with no untoward incident. This is a democratic election process and we are glad to note the people's acceptance of our campaign,” he told reporters after completing his walkabout at the market yesterday.

He called on voters to turn out on polling day and vote for the BN based on the coalition's proven track record of governing the country.

Rozman is scheduled to attend a number of meet-the-people sessions today in several villages.

Earlier, he met 100 taxi operators at the presentation of the 1Malaysia Taxi Assistance Cards at the Labuan Golf Club here.

The assistance card which carries a value of RM800 to buy petrol or natural gas for vehicles (NGV) at Petronas stations also qualifies them for other benefits under the Petronas Mesra loyalty programme, which includes personal accident insurance coverage of up to RM50,000.

The aid is a form of recognition of the role of taxi drivers in the nation's public transport industry, as well as acknowledgement that fuel is an essential component in the operation of the taxi industry.

Meanwhile, Labuan BN component parties of Gerakan, MCA and MIC have pledged their support to the BN candidate to defend the Labuan parliamentary seat in the 14th General Election (GE14) on May 9.

The BN component parties will ensure the more than 20 per cent Chinese registered voters on the island will vote for the BN candidate.

The Election Commission (EC) has registered 28,356 electors eligible to cast their votes.

Labuan Gerakan chief, Datuk Oi Thiam Beng said Rozman's first term as MP on the island had proved his devotion and compassion to help the people.

The island's MCA chief, Datuk Chin Hon Vui said Rozman had highlighted the need for government assistance to help revive the island's economy.

He said the BN candidate throughout his tenure as Labuan MP had done a lot for Labuan, bringing investors to hep activate the duty-free island's economy. - Bernama
