Despatch rider denies robbing couple

KUALA LUMPUR: A despatch rider pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here yesterday to a charge with robbing a Rohingya couple of RM1,500, two handphones and their UNHCR cards.

K. Sankar, 32, was charged with two others still at large, with robbing Ismail Abul Kassim and Robizah Khatu Abdul Munaf, involving losses amounting to RM2,500, behind Block 60, Flat Sri Sabah, Cheras, at 9.15 pm last April 24.

The charge, under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang-robbery, provides an imprisonme­nt for up to 20 years and whipping, if found guilty.

Judge Dr Gan Chee Keong allowed Sankar bail of RM15,000 in one surety and also orderd him to report himself at the nearest police station every fortnight and to not intimidate the victims.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Farith Muhammad Faizal prosecuted.

In the same court, Shahril Azhar Mohamed Rani, 39, pleaded not guilty to possession of a 22-cm long kris in a public area without a permit.

The offence was allegedly committed at Petronas Jalan Semilang, Taman Tenaga, Cheras, at 6.15 pm last April 28.

The charge, under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, provides an imprisonme­nt for up to 10 years, if found guilty.

The court set May 16 for mention of both cases. - Bernama
