BB Bersaudara win double in dragon boat race

TAWAU: BB Bersaudara was the winner of the Men’s Open and Mixed Open of the 34th Dragon Boat Race held here yesterday.

The first and second runnersup for the Mixed Open were Sedafiat Sdn Bhd and PPPC Tawau respective­ly.

Taking the second and third spots of the Men’s Open were Teck Guan Trading Sdn Bhd and Putra Gym (A) respective­ly.

In the Pure Chinese category, the Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns Tawau Youth Section was the winner, the Alumni of Sabah Chinese High School was the first runnerup and the Tawau Hokkien Associatio­n second runner-up.

The race was officiated by Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching who praised the Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns Tawau for preserving the Chinese traditiona­l culture in Sabah and Malaysia.

Mary said the federation had organised several activities in relation to Chinese traditiona­l culture such as dragon boat race, Chinese New Year festival and lantern festival throughout the years.

Mary hoped that every participan­t would have the spirit of sportsmans­hip and discipline as well as maintain the value of cooperatio­n in the dragon boat race.

Meanwhile, president of Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns Tawau, Kapitan Pang Kon Shin said the dumpling festival is an important traditiona­l celebratio­n in Chinese culture, adding that there is a dire need to promote it to the younger generation.

Pang said the dragon boat race could strengthen the relationsh­ip, respect and unity among the different ethnic groups and religions because the participan­ts were of different races.
