Sabah, Penang match titles haul

Hosts Sabah and Penang shared the honours with six tles each in the 100PLUS Na onal Junior Circuit (2nd leg) Zone A tournament which ended at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas yesterday.

KOTA KINABALU: Hosts Sabah and Penang shared the honours with six titles each in the 100PLUS National Junior Circuit (2nd leg) Zone A tournament which ended at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas near here yesterday.

Andrew Aguwell and Goh Shuen Tong were the toast of the state squad after winning two titles each in the tournament.

Andrew won the boys’ under-14 singles, where he defeated Elvestly Daniel Edry in an all-sabah final 14-21, 2111 and 21-18.

Andrew and Elvestly then joined forces to beat fellow Sabahans Azahawari Hanz Haiqal-James Carlester Cleve 21-19, 21-19 to take the boys’ doubles title.

As for Shuen Tong, she took the girls’ under-14 singles crown after beating Pahang’s Nicole Yeo Feng Yue 21-8, 217.

Shuen Tong’s second title came in the doubles event, where she partnered with Melody Wong Jin Ning to a 21-7, 21-15 victory over Perak pair Aneesa Soofiyah RoslanVann­ee Gobi.

Sabah’s two remaining titles came in the boys’ under-16 doubles where Fong Kua Yoong-Samin Demond Anthony defeated Rayner Beh Chun Meng-Goh Boon Zhe of Penang 21-18, 23-21.

Arena Satu Samin, the state winner from the first leg, retained her girls’ under16 singles title with a 21-13, 21-4 win over Penang’s Khor Jing Qen.

Two more Sabah players also made it into the finals but were floored by shuttlers from Penang, a known badminton powerhouse at all levels in the country.

Mozes Mohd Hamizan lost to Penang’s Samuel Lee 20-22, 1921 in the boys’ under-16 singles while Kon Han went down in the battle for the girls’ under12 singles title 16-21, 10-21 to Tan Zhing Hui.

Penang also won in the boys’ under-12 singles where V. Tamilarasu­kumar outlasted teammate Tan Kean Wei 21-18, 18-21 and 22-20.

Tamilarasu­kumar then returned in the doubles event with Koay Boon Chuan to beat teammate Mohd Alif HaikalTan Kean Wei 19-21, 21-11 and 21-14.

In the girls’ under-16 doubles, Ho Lo Ee-Tan Zhing Yi claimed a straight sets 21-16, 21-19 win over teammates Lim Sze JinTan Xin Zoh.

In another all-Penang affair final, Zhing Hui clinched her second title with Hazel Chang Shu Ning in the girls’ under-12 final where they beat Celine Ng-Lim Zi Shin 21-15, 21-18.

For the record, the tournament was a platform for junior shuttlers to qualify for the National Grand Prix Finals to be held in Negeri Sembilan from July 4 to 8.
