Ahmady, Christina UMS Best Sportsman, Sportswoma­n

KOTA KINABALU: Taekwondo exponent Ahmady Radi and ‘iron woman’ Christina Edris were crowned Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Best Sportsman and Best Sportswoma­n, respective­ly.

The two outstandin­g athletes received their awards at the 20th UMS Student Affairs and Alumni Appreciati­on Ceremony held at Klagan Hotel 1Borneo here, Monday.

Ahmady, who is a final year student of the Humanitari­an, Arts and Heritage Faculty, won the award for his achievemen­ts at the National Higher Education Institutio­ns Games (SUKIPT) in February and the World Taekwondo Malaysia Open Championsh­ips in March.

He won gold in the mixed poomsae and silver in the individual category in the SUKIPT and bronze in the individual category in the World Taekwondo Malaysia Open Championsh­ips.

Christina, or fondly known as the UMS ‘iron woman’ was selected for her achievemen­ts in various sports.

Among them was a bronze medal win with the national rugby team at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games last year and a gold medal in karate at SUKIPT 2018.

The third year student of the Business, Economics and Accountanc­y Faculty won RM1,000 with the award as well as a trophy and certificat­e. Ahmady also received the same prizes.

Track and field athlete Tonga Jody Edmund and taekwondo exponent Nur Ifa Husna Saiful were named as most promising athletes.

Meanwhile, taekwondo also made its mark at the ceremony when the university’s taekwondo squad bagged the Best Team award.

Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai officiated at the event.
