‘Operation Red Sea’ voted best picture
BEIJING: Action movie Operation Red Sea won the Best Film Award during the Beijing College Student Film Festival over last weekend.
Director Feng Xiaogang’s romance drama film Youth, which achieved huge success both at the box office and among reviewers, won two awards including Best Director, with young actress Zhong Chuxi named as Best New Performer.
Actress Miao Miao was named Best Newcomer.
Nearly 300 Chinese films (including Chinese-foreign coproductions) were entered for the competition.
“This is the 25th year of my film career, the same age of the festival, “Feng noted as he clutched the Best Director trophy. “I hope I can stick to realistic filmmaking.”
Veteran actor Chang Chen and actress Zhou Xun won Best Actor and Best Actress awards while The Looming Storm won the Best Directorial Debut Award.
Awards were also handed out based on the popularity of the films among students. Detective Chinatown 2 won the Most Popular Film Among College Students award.
“I have made three films thus far in my career as director. They have all received awards at the festival, “raved director Chen Sicheng. “I want to continue to keep in touch with this festival.”
Actor Li Chen won the Most Popular Director Among College Students award for his directorial debut Sky Hunter. He paid a special tribute to his actress girlfriend Fan Bingbing: “She gave me the biggest support during the film production and always stood by me. Thank you and I love you.”

Best Actress Award while actor Zhang Zhen, a member of this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury, won Best Actor for his performance in the action movie Brotherhood of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield.
Chen Kaige was hailed with the Best Visual Effects award for Legend of the Demon Cat. The film featured gorgeous scenes, and brought back to life the former Chinese imperial capital Chang’an of 1,300 years ago, when it was the world’s most populous city.
Yang Mi and Dong Chengpeng won the most popular actress and actor awards respectively.
