Heart patient discharged from hospital to vote
KOTA KINABALU: Despite suffering from heart disease and breathing difficulties, Chok Nyuk Meng insisted the doctor allow her to be discharged from the hospital so that she could perform her civic duty as a voter.
Chok, 57, said she was just discharged from Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 (QEH2) on Tuesday.
“I have heart problems and breathng difficulties.
“But I insisted to be discharged so I could vote.”
She was one of the many elderly citizens who turned up at SJK(C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu, one of the polling stations for P.172 Kota Kinabalu parliamentary and N.15 Api-Api state seats.
Voters started lining up as early as 6.30am at the polling stations, including SJK(C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu, eager to cast their votes.
SJK(C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu served as the polling station for over 9,000 voters and some voters had to queue outside the school for two hours before being allowed in.
There were 14 streams (saluran) at the schools and the voters were only allowed to enter the polling station in batches to ensure orderliness. The polling stations had designated stream for senior citizens as well.
Also casting their votes at the school were Barisan Nasional's (BN) Api-Api candidate Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai and his spouse, Datin Vicky Yee.
Meanwhile, N.14 Likas state seat candidate Datuk Chin Shu Ying (BN-LDP), accompanied by his wife Datin Voo Siew Chin casted their votes at the SMK Perempuan Likas polling station at 8.45am.
SMK Perempuan Likas was the polling station for Kota Kinabalu parliamentary and Likas state seats.
Also with Chin was his brother, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) deputy president Datuk Chin Su Phin and spouse Datin Helen Wong, LDP secretary general Datuk Yong Wui Chung and deputy central women leader, Glenna Wong.
