TAWAU: Pakatan Harapan (PH) PKR Tawau parliamentary candidate Christina Liew pledged to do her best after the predicted ‘tsunami’ gave PH and its coalition partners the opportunity to take the helm of the country as the people’s wish for a change has taken place.

Christina said with the tsunami, Chinese Malaysian voters stood their ground for the need to change and the combination had yielded the result.

“Our coalition political parties are just vessels and Malaysians, through their ballots, are the driving force and the actual heroes in this landmark result shown for the first time in the nation’s political history,” she said of the results of the 14th general election.

Christina who won a resounding victory in both seats which she credited her victories to the voice of the people.

She won the parliamentary seat with a commanding 4,727-vote majority over incumbent Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching and at the same time beating her closest contender in the Api-Api constituency with a majority of 2,954 votes.

“My machinery did its best and the result showed that it had not worked in vain because our dream for a change has been realized and now it is time to rebuild our beloved nation which we have inherited from the past government which again requires a lot of efforts but we will rebuild it together,” she said.

Citing the short time given to contest in the parliamentary seat, Christina said the machinery there had done its part extremely well despite the short-comings.

“The voters have given me the mandate and it is now for me and my team to fulfil our obligations,” she added.

Meanwhile, Mary has thanked all the Tawau people who came out to vote on May 9.

She said in a statement yesterday the voters have made their choice and she respects their decision.

The former Deputy Education Minister also extended her gratitude to her supporters for voting and supporting her over the years, which, she said, is very meaningful to her.

She thanked the BN Tawau election machinery (comprising of BN component parties), the JKKK, WNC, the village chiefs, #TeamKakMary and all those who had worked hard with her nightly campaigning all over Tawau.

Mary also congratulated the PKR candidate and her party for their victory in the Tawau parliamentary seat. She hoped the mandate given will be translated into good service for the people.
