Respect decision of voters – Kedah BN
ALOR SETAR: Kedah Barisan Nasional (BN) has accepted the electorate’s decision to vote it out in the 14th general election (GE14).
Its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said BN respected the wish of the people and would not waver in upholding democracy and the national constitution.
“For us, the system of democracy and the national constitution must be upheld for the sake of harmony and well-being of the country,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The former Kedah menteri besar said BN after taking over the state government from PAS in GE13 had carried out its responsibilities wholeheartedly for the people and state.
“We pray that our beloved Kedah and Malaysia would continue to progress and its sovereignty safeguarded,” he said.
In GE14, Pakatan Harapan (PH) led by former menteri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir won 18 of the 36 state seats. BN won three and PAS, 15.
The state government has not been formed as none of the parties managed to obtain a simple majority of 19 to do so.
Ahmad Bashah failed to retain the Suka Menanti seat he had held for six terms after getting only 7,050 votes compared to Zamri Yusuf (PKR-PKR)’s 13,301. PAS’ Mohd Sabri Omar obtained 4,580 votes.
In Kuala Terengganu, BN said it would ensure a smooth transition of power to PAS.
However, Terengganu BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman requested for some cooling off time before doing so.
“I would like to thank the people of Terengganu for carrying out their responsibility as voters in GE14 yesterday. They have made their decision and we respect it,” he said in a statement.
PAS won 22 of the 32 state seats in GE14 on Wednesday.
Meanwhile in Johor Bahru, Johor BN chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin believed the people had consciously decided to choose a new government.
He said the party machinery including volunteers and supporters had done their best to serve the people yet they had made a decision, which must be respected.
“As I have said, the state, country practise democracy. The people have made their decision possibly because of many reasons,” he told a press conference here.
Mohamed Khaled who is also Johor Umno liaison chairman said Johor BN would give their fullest cooperation to the new government and ensure a smooth transition of power.
“We would like to wish every success to the new government in their effort to see that Johor will continue to progress in bringing more benefit to the people,” he said.
