Mordi thanks voters for contributing to election win

-

BAU: Newly-elected Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol had a walkabout in downtown Bau yesterday to thank the voters for contributing to Pakatan Harapan winning the seat.

He was declared the winner the Wednesday evening at the tallying centre in Bau Civic Centre by defeating the incumbent from Barisan Nasional, Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) secretary general Datuk Anthony Nogeh Gumbek in what is described as a giant-killing feat.

He spent more an hour going from shoplot to shoplot, to greet and shake hands with the shopowners and other people who were within the vicinity. He also took time to listen to their feedback and suggestions.

"I am thankful to all those who have contributed to our (PH) victory in Mas Gading. As an appreciation to the voters, I want to personally say 'thank you' to them starting from Bau town before going over to the villages here," said Mordi, who is also state DAP youth chief and Pakatan Harapan Sarawak youth chief.

Going into the election as underdog, Mordi, 33, won the straight-fight after he garnered 12,771 votes against Nogeh, who garnered 9,747 votes to enable him to win by a 3,024-vote majority.

It was his second attempt at Mas Gading. In his debut in 2013, he polled 5,293 votes in a fourcornered fight, which was won by Nogeh.

Meanwhile, the people in Bau town were pleasantly surprised to see Mordi, and they took the opportunity to personally congratulate him and gave him words of encouragement.

After Bau, Mordi and his entourage left to Kampung Sibuluh to visit a family whose member had just passed away.

A PH supporter Mila Josimp, 25, said Mordi's victory represented the voice of the young people in Mas Gading who wanted to see a change of government.

She said youths in Mas Gading are not spared from financial burdens caused by goods and services tax (GST) especially those who are about to start their own families.

"Even though Mas Gading is not an urban area, but the cost of living here is not much different than in the towns and cities.

"The youths in Mas Gading have hopes that the new MP in the person of Mordi Bimol, and the new government under PH, will implement more beneficial initiatives which can help improve the lives of youths like us in rural areas," she said.
