Sports Commission outlines new regulation­s for cycling events

KOTA KINABALU: The Sports Commission have outlined new constituti­on and regulation­s to enhance the safety of cycling programmes in the State.

A briefing session that involved the Sabah State Cycling Associatio­n (SSCA) was conducted in Putatan near here for the purpose.

Thirty-eight participan­ts, namely, officials from districts cycling associatio­ns of Keningau, Kinabatang­an, Kota Marudu, Membakut, Lahad Datu, Papar, Penampang, Sandakan, Tawau and around Kota Kinabalu will be attending.

Sports Commission officer in Sabah, Sempini Langiton, stressed that organiser must submit completed form when they would want to hold cycling event.

“There will be a committee to look after all cycling events in Sabah. This is to allow us to oversee the growing activities of cycling groups.

“It is to protect the cyclists or organisers, or even SSCA, of their welfare and safety,” Sempini said.

Under the new rules, all cycling competitio­ns, fun ride and charity ride at state level must apply for approval from the Sabah Sports Commission­er and follow the rules of the Internatio­nal Cycling Federation (UCI).

Meanwhile, SSCA president, Raijas Anang, welcomes the call from the Sports Commission as this would enhance cycling activities systematic­ally and efficientl­y.

“We in SSCA would like to express our thanks to the Sports Commission and Sempini...we hope that cycling in Sabah will continue to grow and go on to produce athletes with calibre,” he said.

Also present at the briefing were SSCA secretary Beatrice Lajawa and the associatio­n supreme council members.
