Sandakan businesses given one month to change price tags

SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) has found that all sellers in Sandakan are implementing zero-rated Goods and Services Tax (GST) following the announcement of the tax abolition starting June 1.

KPDNKK Sandakan Branch chief Abdul Muis Samsudin said all business premises were complying with zero-rated GST, but they had been receiving complaints from consumers who claimed that most of price tags had yet to be changed.

Muis also said that KPDNKK would give one month to all business premises (until end of June), to change the price tags on goods sold to zero percent GST, and they would conduct inspections around here again.

“We will give them (business premises) time to change the price tags until June 30, but the receipt produced from the counter must indicate that zero per cent GST was charged, otherwise strict action would be taken against the offender,” he said.

Muis also said that KPDNKK would conduct surprise inspections on the 22 controlled items here from time to time for 15 days, seven days before Hari Raya Aidifitri and seven days after the festivity.

He said this after inspecting two local supermarkets here with his team and Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong Ket Kiun.

Meanwhile, Muis disclosed that from January to May this year, KPDNKK had conducted 3,050 surprise inspections in Sandakan and 28 cases were brought to court.

At the same time, 19 complaints were received and RM211,443.05 worth of items were confiscated while RM22,564 fines were imposed on offenders.

Muis also appealed to the public to report any violation of price goods by calling its hotline at 089-668107/1800886-800 or email to e-aduan@ kpdnkk.gov.my.
