Petronas empowers 150 MRSM students in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 150 sponsored students of Program BUDI-Petronas from MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) took part in a three-day intensive workshop organised by Petronas.
The students were from MRSM Kota Kinabalu, MRSM Sandakan and MRSM Tawau.
The workshop, which started on July 20, was aimed at nurturing soft skills, teamwork and leadership skills, and helping the students to maximise their full potential.
During the workshop, they participated in a student development programme, science activities and career talk facilitated by trainers and facilitators from the Petronas Leadership Centre, Petrosains and Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
“I have learnt a lot through this workshop. We are encouraged to think critically in solving problems. We also had a chance to work with friends from other MRSMs. It was a truly unforgettable experience,” said Muktajal Yacob, a participant from MRSM Sandakan.
The workshop was officiated by Datuk Bruno Vun, the Permanent Secretary to the Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry.
Also present were Rokiah Sulaiman, head of Petronas Sabah Labuan Regional Office and Suhaimi B Zainuddin, director of Sabah Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and Gilbert Wong Kia Kiat, principal of MRSM KK.
“We want to thank Petronas for organising this programme and it is hoped the students will use the knowledge that they get from this workshop for their future endeavors,” said Bruno.
In collaboration with MARA, the Program BUDI-Petronas provides sponsorship to selected students from less privileged families, studying at the three MRSMs in Sabah, as well as three MRSMs in Sarawak.
Under this sponsorship, students receive yearly education allowances to pay for their school uniforms, textbooks, sports attire, learning aid, and other basic necessities.
The programme aims to instill learning interest among students and nurture interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.
To date, a total of 237 Sabahan students have benefited from Program BUDI-Petronas since 2015.
