Buffalo as grand prize at Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebratio­n

KOTA KINABALU: A buffalo, two goats, chickens, ducks, and other prizes will be up for grabs for the lucky visitors of the inaugural Sabah level Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebratio­n at Dewan Masyarakat Pekan Kiulu on August 8 and 9.

Organizing chairman Tan Sri Wences Angang said free lucky draw tickets would be issued to everyone who registered during the occasion.

He said the buffalo would be the grand prize, the goats being the second prize and live chickens and ducks would be the third prize amongst other goodies.

Winners will be announced on the afternoon of August 9.

Angang said the organizers were expecting at least 5,000 people would attend the launching ceremony on August 9, which will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The organizing chairman confirmed that 20 ethnic associatio­ns will be participat­ing in the various programs lined up for the event.

“We are also inviting about 50 leaders of the ethnic associatio­ns in Sabah. There are 50 ethnic associatio­ns (in Sabah), we are actually inviting all of them for the opening,” said Angang.

“(There will be) three main exhibition­s. One on traditiona­l food, traditiona­l tools like musical ones, various cultural ethnic performanc­es, preparatio­n of traditiona­l food,” he added.

Besides that, a Bosou (a KadazanDus­un signature dish such as preserved fish or preserved mixed vegetables) Competitio­n has already attracted 30 participan­ts from throughout Sabah.

In addition, two separate seminars will be held on indigenous intellectu­al property and indigenous rights on the night of August 8, amongst other activities.

Meanwhile, the exhibition will combine the two concepts of live demonstrat­ions and static showcases that will be done by the ethnic associatio­ns and Sabah Museum Department and Sabah Archives Department respective­ly.
