Sedco A win main prize in Sedco Golf Challenge
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) A clinched the main prize at the Sedco Golf Challenge that ended at the Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club (DBGCC) in Tuaran near here on Saturday.
Based on the best three scores using the Stableford System 36, Sedco A comprising State Secretary Datuk Hashim Paijan, Haji AM Yusof Abd Razak, Adrian Alang and Azrul Ahmad won with a total of 107 points.
It was the narrowest of victory margins as Sedco A edged Sabah Urban Development Corporation (SUDC) by a single point to lift the Sedco Challenge Trophy on the 16th edition of the competition.
SUDC comprising Ali Hassan Ag. Salleh, Andrew Thien and Anthony Dumpangol accumulated 106 points while Cement Industries Sabah (CIS) featuring Ishak Idris, Haji Sumardi Yusof, Haji Jasmi Thien and Lee Eng Seong finished third in the Closed category with 102 points.
In the Open category, Team Rukut comprising Datu Goldah Haji Keri, Hamza Maidin, Jusli Potoh and Hasbi Sariat came out on top with 114 points, two SEPANG: The gold and bronze medals won at her last appearance in the Asian Games will be Datuk Nicol Ann David’s morale booster to pursue success in the new season of the PSA Tour championships.
“It is always gives nice vibes to win after sometime...it is also good to win a gold medal in the Asian Games.
“Feeling fresh after the Asian Games, I think I will start strong (at China Open) in the new competition season. My goal is to start every match with a good result. The China Open is the start of the season where all the top 20 players will be playing,” Nicol said when met upon her arrival from Jakarta at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here yesterday.
The national squash queen arrived at LIA after competing at the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games before continuing her flight to Shanghai, China for the China Open Squash Championship which starts on Wednesday until Sept 9.
On Aug 26, the Penangite who celebrated her 35th birthday, secured a second gold medal for the Malaysian contingent in the 2018 Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang.
“To win my fifth gold medal after a sixth Asian Games, it is really special,” she said.
It was Nicol’s fifth gold medal at the Asian Games, having won the Asiad gold medal in four editions - 1998, 2006, 2010 and 2014.
She finished as the runnerup in the 2002 edition in Busan, South Korea, after losing to Rebecca Chiu of Hong Kong.
“Actually, it was not easy, it was a tough encounter with our young and inspirational players like Sivasangari. She was really firing and I had to go all out to challenge her. I’m happy it paid off with a gold medal,” said Nicol.
The world number nine player was pushed to the limit by national junior player, S. Sivasangari before prevailing in a five-set thriller, 11-13, 119, 5-11, 11-6 and 11-8 in the Asiad women’s individual squash final.
Nevertheless, Nicol was delighted to see more Malaysian junior players making their mark at the international stage, especially the Asian Games. — Bernama better than their nearest rivals Cabin Crew and Media-F&N.
Cabin Crew, represented by Azmi Ahmad, Capt Roshidi Abd Rahman, Syamsul Osman and Asmat Muhamad, settled for second on countback (OCB) while Media-F&N (Valerian Hansen Petrus, Desmond Qwek, Jackson Gamalid and Pauzi Antahar) finished third.
In the Individual competition, Pauzi won the Open Gross category with four-over 76, followed by Azmi who lost out on OCB to the former while Erwin @ Batilis Jaraman was third on 77.
As for the Closed Gross category, Adrian topped with 83 while Andrew was second with 87 and Bidin Numbong third on 88.
The Open Nett category saw Goldah win with 40 points, followed by Sabrie Husin who edged Hamza for the second place via OCB after both had played an identical 38 points.
Mordiana Abdullah was the Closed Nett category winner with 36 points, beating Ali Hassan and Ishak by three points, Ali was second after OCB. Hashim, accompanied by Sedco Group Social and Sports Club (KKS) chairperson Mordiana, presented the prizes to the winners.
Meanwhile, Mordiana expressed thanks to all who have contributed to the success of the tournament, which attracted 31 teams with participants from Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
