Standards of local runners for Kokol challenge much better

-

KOTA KINABALU: Organisers of the recently concluded Kokol Nature Adventure Challenge are happy with the staging of this year’s edition of the annual event.

Caser Events managing director Steve Johnny Mositun said not only was the turn-out of 200 participants encouraging, the standard of local runners was also notably better.

“The local runners were at the best level. If we have proper training, knowledge about nutrition and sports health knowledge, I think we can see even higher standards,” he said.

Tee Aik Chuan who is a sports science graduate from Taiwan, flew all the way from Penang to join the event.

He was impressed with the way organisers staged the event and acknowledged the potential of the race.

Brian Drinkal of the United States was the only foreigner in the competition.

He enjoyed the scenery of the hill paddy and river section and will encourage friends to join other editions in future.

“I am happy to join the event. This is among the best local Sabah events I have ever joined. Thank you to the organiser for a job well done,” he said while shocking the crew members with his fluency in Bahasa Malaysia.

The event which was held at CL Rindu Farmstay in Kg Tombongon, Manggatal on September 23, saw David Simpat clinch the top spot, while Sapirin Sumping, Safrey Sumping and Wincenbert Larius finished in second, third and fourth place respectively.

Tee Aik Chuan, who is one of Penang’s best endurance sports athletes, finished fifth.

The women’s open was won by Jassica Lintangga, followed by Mailin Salungin and Melsheira Jumid in second and third place.

The top three in the men’s veteran category were Ruston Masri, Guianus Salagan and Jasri Saibin, while the top three in the women’s veteran were Kona Liau, Chong Yun Lung and Rose Flimbalo.

Meanwhile, the highlight of the event saw David Limjoon prove that determination can go a long way.

“He was the last to cross the finish line but the willingness and determination he showed to finish the race was priceless,” said Steve.

David surprised himself too as he did not expect that he could complete the entire 17km course.

“I didn’t expect that I can finish the race but the loud cheering spurred me on and I told myself not to quit. In the end, it was worth it to receive the finisher’s medal from Steve,” he said.

Caser Events patron Datuk Johnny Mositun officiated at the closing and prize presentation ceremony on behalf of Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Yeoh Boon Hai.

Towards this end, Steve thanked all the participants for supporting the event and hoped they would join again in future.
