Heriot-Watt University Malaysia signs partnership deal with oil company
KUALA LUMPUR: Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) and Velesto Energy Berhad (VEB) (formerly known as UMW Oil & Gas Corporation Berhad) have embarked on a four-year partnership aimed at opening up more opportunities for those passionate in the petroleum engineering field.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by key representatives of each organisation; Professor Dennis Wong, Deputy Provost, HeriotWatt University Malaysia, and Rohaizad Darus, President, Velesto Energy Berhad.
The signing ceremony took place during the 4th Malaysia Oil & Gas Services Exhibition and Conference (MOGSEC 2018).
Following the signing of the MoU which was witnessed by Minister of Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Ignatius Darell Leiking and President and Chief Executive Officer of Petronas, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, the “Heriot-Watt – Velesto Engineering Scholarship Programme” is now officially in effect.
The programme is a joint scholarship by the university and VEB to generate greater attention towards the study of petroleum engineering and to pave the way for more opportunities to be opened for students hoping to delve into a career in petroleum engineering.
Also present were various prominent industry players, experts of the oil and gas industry as well as company representatives and participants of MOGSEC 2018.
Rohaizad Darus, President, Velesto Energy Berhad was quoted saying, “The scholarship programme is hoped to increase awareness on the importance and relevance of petroleum engineering in Malaysia and globally among the public. It also aims to continue building quality human capital in the oil and gas industry and in turn, shape the future of Malaysia’s economy.”
Besides providing a chance for high-achievers with at least 2As and 1B at A-Levels or equivalent to attain 50% to 100% fee exemptions for its coming intake, the scholarship grants students a chance to join professional development programmes and mentorship by experts from Velesto, on-site visits as well as opportunities for internship and training in line with preparing students for a career in the oil and gas industry.
