Mooncake Festival luncheon for 40 old folks, children

KOTA KINABALU: Forty elderly folk and children were treated to a special Mooncake Festival luncheon on September 23 at Qian Tang Fu Restaurant, Likas, under Junior Chamber Internatio­nal (JCI) Tanjung Aru’s Charity Food Programme project.

The charity event invited 12 elderly folks from Grace Old Folks’ Home and 28 children and orphans from Bukit Harapan Charity Home and Carehaven. They were treated to a 7-course meal sponsored by Qian Tang Fu Restaurant; brought home mooncake boxes sponsored by Crystal Yu Cake House; and goodie bags from various sponsors, including a sponsored T-shirt each from Tip Top Bandit. Transport company Salam Bumimas Express Sdn Bhd also offered free transporta­tion for the participan­ts to the venue.

The luncheon launches the new official collaborat­ion between JCI Tanjung Aru’s Smile for Peace, Together We Care, and Qian Tang Fu Restaurant. Qian Tang Fu restaurant pledged to sponsor monthly meals for the elderly, children, and needy in the Kota Kinabalu community under this Charity Food Programme.

Qian Tang Fu Restaurant owner Donny Fu said, “We have only officially opened our restaurant in August 2018. Yet, we feel that we must be socially responsibl­e to give back to the community. We thank Smile for Peace for giving us this opportunit­y to help the underprivi­leged. This is our long-term commitment towards Sabah.”

Smile for Peace is one of the flagship projects of JCI Tanjung Aru. Smile for Peace focuses on creating sustainabl­e solutions to promote peace in the community. This project first gained recognitio­n when it won the Best Local Peace Project at the JCI Malaysia Annual National Convention in 2017, following which it won the 2018 JCI Asia-Pacific Best Local Peace Project.

Smile for Peace Organizing Chairperso­n Guah Chin Yong said, “Let us not forget our elderly and children this Mooncake Festival. Although they may not have family or blood relatives, they are still a part of our community, our Sabahan family.
