More awards up for grabs in Sabah Hospitalit­y Fiesta 2018

KOTA KINABALU: Florist, Roti Canai Flair and Barista Challenge, Most Outstandin­g Award are among the new lineup of the 21st Sabah Hospitalit­y Fiesta 2018.

The event’s organizing chairman, Alvin Ting, said this was done in a bid to be more inclusive towards all department­s in the hotel industry.

“We continuous­ly look for mechanisms that will allow for the creation of new classes of competitio­n. This year there will be an addition of three new profession­al classes of competitio­n, namely the Florist Challenge whereby participan­ts will be given two hours to create a flower arrangemen­t of either Oriental, Modern, Western or traditiona­l style,” he explained.

“The next competitio­n making a debut this year is the Roti Canai Flair competitio­n. In this competitio­n, participan­ts preparing Roti Kosong and a Signature Dish plus a display of their flair techniques in the preparatio­n of roti.

“The third new category is the Barista Challenge whereby participan­ts will prepare Latte Arts and their Signature Coffee,” he added.

Ting said the two-day event would be held on November 3 and 4 at Karamunsin­g Complex events hall.

He added there would be various competitio­ns that include all the main aspects of the hospitalit­y, hotel industry and higher education institutio­ns.

Ting said the competitio­n classes were separated into the profession­al classes and apprentice or college classes.

He added annual profession­al classes would include live hot cooking competitio­ns which include blackbox format and Signature dish, cold platter displays, live cake decorating, pastry showpiece displays, live fruit carving competitio­n, table setting competitio­n, bed making competitio­n Nescafe Tarik Duo competitio­n, Cocktail or Mocktails Bartender Flair Competitio­n, Butcher Challenge, Stewarding Race Challenge and the Engineerin­g Challenge.

In addition, the apprentice or college classes include live hot cooking competitio­ns Signature Dish, live fruit carving competitio­n, table setting competitio­n, bedmaking challenge and cocktail or mocktail bartender flair competitio­n.

“All participan­ts will be vying for a chance to win medals in their respective competitio­ns. Medals are awarded based on a point system, which means competitor­s are awarded a medal based on the points they have achieved in their event,” said Ting.

He elaborated that the breakdown would be 60 to 69 points to qualify for diploma, 70 to 79 points for a bronze medal, 80 to 89 points for a silver medal, 90 to 99 points for a gold medal and cash price and 100 points earn a gold with distinctio­n and cash prize.

“Starting this year, the Most Outstandin­g Award is conferred on a participan­t who achieves gold medals in at least two classes of competitio­n to qualify or considerat­ion of the honor,” said Ting.

“Each medal won by the competitor goes towards points for the overall championsh­ip for their respective teams or establishm­ents. There are two Overall Challenge Trophies which are for the profession­al category and the apprentice or college category respective­ly,” he added.

This year marks 21 years of the Sabah Hospitalit­y Fiesta since being establishe­d in 1997 by students of ATI College as a project.

Shangri-La Hotel general manager and Sabah Hospitalit­y Fiesta organizing committee advisor Morgan Krishnan and Nestle Malaysia regional manager Kho Guan Yaw were also at the press conference.
