CM urges newspapers to use new ways to improve contents

-

KOTA KINABALU: Print media, especially newspapers in Sabah are urged to change their approach in presenting their contents to remain distinct from the social media.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Shafie Apdal said the challenge facing the newspaper industry was not merely due to the widespread use of social media but also because the culture of reading among the people was on a downward trend.

He said many people no longer read newspapers.

He urged newspapers to improve their contents through different approaches and they needn't publish the same stories shown on the social media in similar ways.

“Find a new approach in terms of the contents of the news since people buy newspapers not only to read news,” he said.

He cited that the publishing house could perhaps publish articles related to education, culture, local content and health.

He said this when receiving a courtesy call from the organisers of the upcoming Kinabalu Shell Journalism Award 2018, yesterday.

Chairman of the upcoming event and president of the Sabah Journalist Association (SJA), Muguntan Vanar, explained that the event would be held on Nov 24 at the Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa (Star).

He said 316 entries had been received from both print and electronic media.

During the call, Shafie also presented the Sabah government contribution of RM60,000 for the event.
