- By Arfandi Jaafar

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 28 districts have confirmed their participation for the KDM Malaysia (KDMM) Football League Tournament 2019.

“We have limited entries to 32 teams, so with the confirmation of the 28 districts it means there are only four vacant slots left,” said organising chairman Henry Saimpon when met here yesterday.

The teams who have confirmed their entries are KDMM Penampang, Melalap, Kemabong, Kota Belud, Kadamaian, Kiulu, Pitas, Matunggong, Kudat, Nabawan, Sook, Keningau, Kimanis, Papar, Sepanggar, Inanam, Ranau, Beaufort, Beluran, Kinabatangan, Semporna, Tambunan, Sipitang, Tawau, Putatan, Kepayan, Labuan and Tongod.

Henry also reminded all teams that only non-state players can be registered for the tournament and those who were still under contract with the state teams were not permitted to join.

“Players must also be MyKad or passport holders,” he said.

The KDMM Football League 2019, which is being organised by the Malaysia Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (KDMM), is the second edition after the staging of the inaugural tournament in 2014-2015.

This time around, the tournament is supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Almost RM300,000 worth of cash prizes will be up for grabs, including RM100,000 for the champion, RM50,000 for the runner-up, RM30,000 for third place and RM15,000 for fourth place.

Teams who make it to the quarter-final will also receive RM2,000 each.

Also up for grabs in the final rounds are novelty prizes including RM500 for the Best Players, Top Scorer and Best Goalkeeper as well as RM2,000 for the team who win the Fair Play award.

There will also be an FA Cup tournament offering RM50,000 for the champion and RM10,000 for the runner-up.

The tournament will kick off with a Charity Cup match between the two winners from the previous edition, namely Keningau (league champions) and Papar (FA Cup winners).

The winner of the Charity Cup match, which was scheduled to be held at the Keningau Stadium in December, will receive RM10,000 cash. The league matches will commence in January 2019.
