Public sector should transform into engine of growth — CM

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah and Malaysia’s public sector should transform into an engine of growth for the betterment of the people, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Shafie said he had proposed to Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad to not only put the country’s money into paying off debts but also the civil service so the country can enjoy great economic growth and create more job opportunities.

“When people are hungry, they are angry. When they are angry anything can happen,” he said at the Jasamu DiKenang farewell ceremony for retired Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Nor Rizan Mohd Thani at Magellan Sutera here yesterday.

“Public service is one of the most important components that can be the engine of growth in all sectors.

“We have to be resourceful. Once you are very resourceful, you can contribute. Sometimes we tend to operate in silo. When you operate in a silo that doesn’t benefit the country,” he added.

Shafie advised the people not to operate in a silo and instead work as a team to serve the people.

“Serve the country, serve the people. You will never go wrong whether you are in service or in politics. You serve people, you will never go wrong in your life as a politician and as a civil servant,” he said.

He also urged Sabahans to unite with the people in the Peninsular to work together for the development of the country.

Shafie added that civil servants played an important role in ensuring the wellbeing of the people today and of future generations.

Nor Rizan was appointed State Federal Secretary on April 5, 2017 and retired on October 6, 2018.

He also celebrated his birthday during the ceremony yesterday.
