Lecture on history of Chinese migration to Sabah

-

KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) president Datuk Michael Lui yesterday urged the Chinese community in the city, especially the younger generation, to attend a public lecture on 'The Chinese Historical Experience in Sabah' by Professor Datuk Dr Danny Wong Tze Ken.

The lecture, which will be delivered in Mandarin, will be held at the Grand Ballroom, Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa on October 15 at 7.30 pm.

Those who wish to attend can register with KKCCCI Secretariat by calling 088-255 470, fax to 088225 299 or email to secretariat@ kkccci.com. Admission is free.

Lui said this during a courtesy call by The Sabah Society president Stella Moo-Tan, immediate past president Dr Elaine Kong, treasurer Chloe Lee, committee members Nicholas Tan and Datuk C.L. Chan here recently.

He said KKCCCI Management and Supervisory committee members would be attending the event, adding that his secretariat has also informed all members about the upcoming lecture.

At the same time, he said the chamber would make arrangement for teachers of the eight schools under the management of KKCCCI to attend the lecture as well.

Lui said the event was an opportunity for the public to learn the history about the mass migration of Chinese from China to Sabah during the mid-19th century.

"The early Chinese migrants who arrived in Sabah were mostly labourers, followed by merchants and families.

"They assimilated into local communities and had made great contributions to the society in Sabah, including establishing temples, churches, associations, chambers of commerce, schools and newspaper companies."

Lui believed that the lecture would enlighten the public on how the role of the Chinese migrants had evolved from labourers to merchants, overseas Chinese and ultimately Malaysian citizens, as well as their involvement in nation building, economic, social and political developments.

Also present was KKCCCI executive secretary Tan Kar Seng.
